• Tankless hot water heaters: Also called on-demand water heaters, these systems generate hot water only when it’s needed. By not storing hot water in a tank, homeowners can save serious money and energy. Tankless water heaters don’t need a storage tank. Instead, when the hot water tap is turned on, cold water is heated through electricity or a gas burner. • Indirect fire energy efficient water heaters: Although these systems do need a storage tank, they’re still much more efficient than traditional hot water heaters.
